6 tips on creative writing (when you don’t feel like it)

My name is Natalia and I’m responsible for storytelling in TrainStation. I’ve always loved writing and making up stories so I do enjoy writing contract descriptions and creating new characters. I often hear the others say stuff like: “I would have like literally no idea what to write about if I were you.” Trust me – me neither! Does that mean that the contracts won’t have a story? Never! Here are some things that help me.
1. JUST. START.
Are you feeling totally uninspired, sick, is it too hot/cold outside, does your cat have a diarrhea or are you afraid that your writing isn’t good enough? Well, let me tell you: There’s never a right time for writing so take a deep breath, open a new doc. and get started!
2. MAKE A PLAN
You don’t need to go into details but it’s always good to make a list of a few points you don’t want to forget and build them up later. Logical order is always a big (and probably inevitable) plus.
3. PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Now comes the graphomaniac part. Put down everything that comes to your mind regarding your previously written points. Don’t censor your thoughts, be creative! Have a coffee. If one isn’t enough, don’t hesitate to grab some more. Whatever helps you with your writing (and is legal) is allowed. When you’re done, take a break.
4. GET RID OF THE UNNECESSARY
Time for self-reflection. Read your text carefully and cross out everything which is: boring, repetitive, off topic, hard to read or doesn’t somehow fit your text. Also do your best to correct typos and rephrase some thoughts if necessary.
5. LET IT REST
You’re almost done! You have certainly spent many exhausting hours writing so now it's best to sleep on it and make the final revision the day after. Also, ask somebody for an honest feedback. I'm sure you can handle it.
6. DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT
Edit the last few details but don’t overthink it, otherwise you could keep editing on and on forever. You may not win the Nobel Prize in Literature but hey… you made it! Now you can spend the rest of your day admiring your masterpiece. Congratulations!
So... that's it for today. See how easy writing can be? :D
Take care,
Natalia
